Luxury Sommelier Sets: The Most Beautiful Gifts for Christmas
The gift you don't throw away: our selection of the most beautiful sommelier sets, and how to properly use a lever corkscrew.
The essentials, in short
In short
What makes the difference: materials (solid metal rather than plastic), finish, and the presentation case.
Our selection: two premium sets at €59.90, ideal for a discerning wine enthusiast.
The finishing touch: a beautifully made wine decanter turns the gift into a complete set.
A low-end sommelier set often ends up in a drawer, forgotten after a few uses. A quality set, on the other hand, remains an object you reach for every time a bottle is opened — the kind of gift that gets noticed and never gets thrown away.
What sets a luxury sommelier set apart
The difference between a low-end set and a premium one comes down to three things: the material of the accessories (a solid metal corkscrew has an entirely different grip and lifespan than a lightweight plastic model), the visible finish (welds, engravings, assembly), and the case itself, which should make you want to gift it as-is, with no extra wrapping needed.
Our go-to sommelier sets
A sleek, refined case that can be given as-is, with no extra wrapping needed.
The same level of quality, in a slightly different presentation to suit different tastes.
How to use a lever corkscrew
The lever corkscrew, also called a "waiter's corkscrew" in its foldable version, is used in three steps: unfold the blade and cut the foil below the bottle's neck ring; screw the worm straight into the center of the cork until only one coil remains visible; rest the first notch against the bottle's rim and lift the lever halfway, then shift the rest to the second notch to fully and gently extract the cork.
For an electric corkscrew, the principle is simpler: position the device straight on the neck, hold the button on one side to insert the worm, then on the other side to automatically extract the cork — ideal for someone less comfortable with the manual motion.
